SVA Film & Animation
FACULTY: Chris Newman

Sound Producer

I have been doing production sound on films for some 50 years. I started doing industrials and commercials, and worked on many documentaries. I was in Southeast Asia and Vietnam in 1966 during the war, working for NBC.

Starting in 1968, I did my first feature, Medium Cool…and have done sound on some 87 feature films, including The French Connection; The Godfather; A Chorus Line; The Silence of the Lambs; Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead; The Taking of Pelham 1, 2, 3; Fame; All That Jazz; and many others.

I have been nominated for eight Oscars, and won for Amadeus, The Exorcist and The English Patient.

My philosophy is to learn by doing…by making mistakes, and learning from those mistakes…to learn to problem solve. I don’t believe in enabling students…when students graduate, their teachers will not be around to help solve problems. Students must be prepared to do their own problem solving, to be on their own and to grow.
