Visual Artist

At the start of the college academic year I have a roomful of students with basic level drawing skills.  At the end of the academic year I have a room full of individual artists who have begun or are accelerating on a path of personal expressiveness and exploration.

I truly believe as a visual artist myself that drawing can hold knowledge about oneself, and that this is a powerful tool to have and understand as an artist.

Over the course of two semesters I lead my students on a journey that asks such basic questions as:

What sort of marks can I make on the page that are mine?
How do I as an individual see the world through observation?
What colors, composition, lines, media can best express what I am trying to say?

As well as formal exercises such as gesture, contour, anatomy, perspective, greyscale values, color theory, experimenting with drawing materials, and even a bit of sculpture thrown in, we also step out of the classroom and into the world to visit zoos, museums, parks, public spaces, and even ferries to have experiences that we can literally draw from.

I love to work and walk beside my students and help them find their own path as artists at the start of their journey at SVA.
