FACULTY: Terry Dame

Composer, Sound Designer

Terry Dame is a creator and manipulator of sound and music in all possible forms, creating scores for film, video, live performance and installation. Approaching projects with an open mind to create the most original work possible from an outside-the-box thinking model is always the goal.

Dame has collaborated with artists from multiple disciplines, including filmmakers Judith Helfand, Jennie Livingston, Diane Bonder, Maria Maggenti and Erin Greenwell; performing artists Lisa Kron, Jennifer Miller and The Split Britches Company, and choreographers Jennifer Monson and Arianne MacBean. In 2006, Dame was selected to be a composer in residence at the prestigious Sundance Institute Composer Lab.

Currently Dame directs and composes for her ensemble Electric Junkyard Gamelan and its solo offshoot project ElectronGong. She also designs and builds the instruments used by the ensemble. Dame is the music director, composer and saxophonist with her seven-piece, world-beat jazz group Monkey on a Rail, and was composer in residence, saxophonist and sound designer with Jennifer Miller’s Circus Amok from 1994-2004. Dame is currently saxophonist with Paprika, Brooklyn’s own acclaimed all-female international dance music band; Dawn Drake’s funk band ZapToe Collectiv; Kenny Wollesen’s Himalaya,s and Jessica Lurie’s Plate Tiptonics. She was an artist in residence at HERE Art Center in 2003 and 2004.

Notable film scores include My Best Day, which premiered at the 2012 Sundance Festival; Puccini for Beginners, which premiered at the 2006 Sundance Festival and was released theatrically in 2007. Her score for Closer to Heaven was awarded best sound design at the Ann Arbor Film Festival.
